The Business of Gifting

The holiday season is quickly approaching, and the end of 2017 is upon us. For many small businesses and entrepreneurs, this is the time of year to show your appreciation to those who play such a vital role in the success of your business.

However, holiday gifting is no small feat. As an entrepreneur, your gift must convey a message of sincerity, while also placing your company in the forefront of the recipient’s mind. A gift can also cement a business relationship, so it is imperative that thought and consideration is put into each and every gift you send.

For clients, opt for something small yet meaningful. If possible, something that shows you value your relationship with that particular client, rather than a generic gift. Has your client mentioned enjoying wine? Send them a bottle from their local region. Or if your client is a workaholic, send them something that will make their lives easier like a portable cell phone charger, wireless earbuds, or a travel mug that will keep their cup of joe warm all day long.

And rather than sending something emblazoned with your company logo on it, take the time to write a meaningful and personalized card letting your client know that you appreciate them, and you look forward to doing business with them in the coming year. This still gets your business in front of their eyes, without seeming desperate.

For vendors and service providers, we love the idea of gifting something that their whole staff can benefit from. We’ve personally received large, gorgeous poinsettia plants each year from one vendor, and we prominently display them in our reception area for everyone to enjoy. Another one of our favorites is a vendor that treats our entire staff to an in-office catered lunch. It provides her with the opportunity to catch up with us in person, and everyone can enjoy a special meal.

Last but not least … your colleagues! Opt for something that shows your holiday appreciation in a personal way. After all, you spend 40+ hours each week with these people, they’re practically family. Think about what they may like, and also what their professional relationship means to you (the gift you select for your boss may be much different than the peer who sits next to you). Our top picks are elegant planners for the year ahead, personalized coffee mugs, a tumbler/thermos, picture frames that match their office/desk décor, a business card case, luxurious pens, or a glamorous paper weight.

We wish all of you a wonderful and warm holiday season ahead.
